The Urbana Today daily paper was created with the help of a team of student journalists.

World Journalism Institute and InterVarsity recruited 22 students from around the United States to report and write for Urbana Today. The team was led by editors Manny Garcia (The Miami Herald) and Michael Smith (Campbell University.)

 

Michael Smith Michael Smith
Campbell University

As a journalist, Michael spent a decade in newsrooms as a reporter and editor and penned more than 3,000 articles for publications such as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Baltimore Sun and Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2001-02, his students recognized him as Favorite Professor of the Year at Campbell University. He and his family live near Raleigh, N.C.
Manny Garcia Manny Garcia
The Miami Herald

Manny Garcia has been the Miami Herald's Metro Editor since June 2003. He joined the paper in 1990 as a suburban writer, assigned to the cop beat. Manny has been a writer and reporter on two Pulitzer Prize winning projects for the Herald, one which uncovered widespread vote fraud in a Miami mayoral race and the second for the coverage of the Elian Gonzalez raid.
   
Julie Alfonso Ramos Julie Afonso, University of Houston
Julie Afonso has always been a storyteller, and she found an outlet for her passion by writing news for her university’s student newspaper. Julie has written for The Daily Cougar for just over a year, specializing in religious news. She will be graduating in May, and with her journalism degree and minor in Spanish she hopes to begin her writing career.
John Brame

John Brame, The College of William and Mary
John Brame studied English at the College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, Va.), where he was active in the school’s InterVarsity Christian Fellowship chapter.  After interning with a small Christian magazine over the summer of 2005, John started to consider pursuing journalism. He graduated from William and Mary in May of 2006.

Caleb Breakey

Caleb Breakey, Western Washington University
Caleb Breakey is a senior journalism major at Western Washington University, concentrating mostly on sports writing. He interned for The Olympian this past summer in Olympia, Wash., and freelances for The Bellingham Herald in Bellingham, Wash. Caleb worked as a sports editor this past fall and sometimes shoots his own photos to accompany his writing assignments.

Mary Chou

Mary Chou, California State University, Sacramento
Mary Chou is studying journalism (with a minor in history) at California State University. She writes for the campus paper, The State Hornet and also freelances and enjoys her NikonD50. Chou leads an InterVarsity small group in the dorms and is encouraged by the challenge and blessing.

Jamie Gentner

Jamie Gentner, Biola University
Jamie Gentner is a senior journalism major at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. She has served on the school newspaper, The Chimes, all four years while attending the school, and she now serves as the Editor in Chief. Gentner has also completed internships with her hometown newspapers, the Mohave Valley Daily News and Laughlin Nevada Times, including freelance work for The Orange County Register.

Lauren Hernandez

Louren Hernandez, Wellesley College
Louren Hernandez is studying architecture and political science at Wellesley College. She is active in her college’s InterVarsity chapter. Hernandez served as the Editor-in-Chief for the International Relations Council Journal, Wellesley’s student-run academic publication, and is currently the vice president of the Network for Global Affairs Journal (N-GAJ) in collaboration with New York University.

Samuel Keane-Rudolph

Samuel Keane-Rudolph, Winona State Univ.
Samuel Keane-Rudolph is a junior studying journalism in Minnesota at Winona State. He writes for the student paper and the mass communication online journal. Keane-Rudolph joined InterVarsity Christian Fellowship as a junior and co-leads a small group Bible study. He is a soldier with the 34th Infantry Division, Minnesota Army National Guard and a cadet with the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse Army ROTC battalion.

Rachel Kolander

Rachel Kolander is a senior political science and English major at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wisc. Besides editing her school paper, she freelances and edits for a community magazine called Community Connections

Darin Miller

Darin Miller, Grove City College
Darin Miller is a student-writer hailing from Line Lexington, Penn., where he lives with his parents and five of his nine siblings.  He is a 19-year-old sophomore at Grove City College in Grove City, Penn., majoring in communication studies and a theatre minor.  He writes for his college’s newspaper, The Collegian. Next year, he will be the editor-in-chief of The Bridge, Grove City College’s yearbook. 

Sarah Miramontes

Sara Miramontes, Diablo Valley College
After attending Urbana 03, Sara Miramontes’s life dramatically changed. “God had laid out a path for me, and yes, there were several detours but Urbana 03 is where I asked God for his will to be done in my life.”  After Urbana 03, she was a summer missionary with Inner City Impact (ICI) in Chicago. While with ICI she felt a tug on her heart to serve in the inner city.

John Robbins

John Robbins, University of South Carolina
John Robbins is a senior print journalism major and political science minor at the University of South Carolina. He is involved with the Reformed University Fellowship campus ministry at USC. Robbins has worked for his school's newspaper, The Daily Gamecock, as a copy editor and a news writer. After graduation in May, Robbins plans to attend law school and spends lots of time preparing to work for the Carolina Reporter, his school's senior semester publication.

Jennifer Rodriguez

Jennifer Rodriguez, Florida International Univ.
Jennifer Rodriguez is 22 years old and was born in the Dominican Republic but has lived most of her life in Miami, Florida. Through them she was able to attend the first WJI Conference for Hispanic Journalists of Faith in California. She is a journalism student at Florida International University and is doing an internship with the Miami Herald. She is to graduate in the Fall of 2007.

Tessa Schwiegert

Tessa Schweigert, Boise State University
Tessa Schweigert is finishing her senior year at Boise State University, where she is studying English and journalism. She began pursuing journalism as an eighth grader in Wyoming, where she grew up as the youngest of four children. Schweigert has worked at several publications, including a stint as editor-in-chief of a weekly college newspaper. 

Ingrina Shieh

Ingrina Shieh, Boston University
Ingrina Shieh is a sophomore at Boston University's College of Communication, pursing a major in magazine journalism and a minor in history. Unless God calls her elsewhere, she aspires to write for either National Geographic or Voice of the Martyrs.

David Teague

David Teague, Appalachian State University
David Teague is a senior at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. He is majoring in journalism with a minor in accounting. He was vice president of his InterVarsity chapter last year. Currently he is writing for his school paper and preparing for a career in reporting.

Sam Townsend

Sam Townsend, Northwestern College
Sam Townsend, a Fergus Falls, Minn., native, is double-majoring in English writing and youth ministry with a minor in Bible at Northwestern College in St. Paul. Sam has worked on various positions at the Northwestern newspaper, including editor-in-chief last year. Under his leadership, the paper won several awards. He has also covered a number of state and national tournaments as a photographer and writer.

John Wagner

John Wagner, The King’s College
John Wagner, a sophomore at The King’s College in New York City, enjoys the competition and excitement found in New York. John, 19, is majoring in politics, philosophy, and economics with a concentration in media.  His collegiate major and strategic location in New York City will benefit him in his pursuit of becoming an influential investigative journalist for the next generation.

Regina Wang

Regina Wang, University of California, Davis
Majoring in sociology and East Asian Studies, Regina Wang is a senior at the University of California, Davis. Like many graduating seniors, she does not have plans for the future, but as for now, she is thrilled to be writing for her school newspaper, The California Aggie. Regina grew up in Taiwan and Michigan.

Jacqualine Williams

Jacqualine Williams, University of Maryland University College
Jacqualine Williams is completing her degree in communication studies/journalism through the University of Maryland University College. She has attended the World Journalism Institute’s African-American Journalists of Faith conference. Williams’s latest endeavor is the creation of her own convergent mass media “Feature Network” writing a weekly column for syndication in print, radio, television and online.

Josh Winata

Joshua Winata, University of Texas at Austin
A native Texan born and raised in Houston, Joshua Winata graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in December with a degree in corporate communication studies.  He worked as a general reporter for The Daily Texan, the nation’s largest campus publication, for one semester and covered a variety of university, business and government events. 

Christine Won

Christine J. Won, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Christine Won is in studying journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Last summer she won a Roy Howard National Collegiate Reporting scholarship to South Korea and Japan for 12 days of media and cultural immersion. She has interned at the Daily Southtown and has worked for two years at the Daily Illini, an independent student newspaper on campus. Fluent in English and Korean, she aspires to become a foreign correspondent in Asia.

Christy Wong

Christy Wong, Taylor University 
Christy Wong grew up in the Chicago suburbs and is preparing to graduate from Taylor University in rural Upland, Indiana with an English/writing major and journalism minor. She is a co-editor of The Ilium, Taylor’s yearbook, and has written book reviews for Christian Book Previews.com. In addition to writing, Wong is a member of the Taylor University Equestrian Team and a French tutor.
